What is a chin augmentation or better known as Chin Implant?
A chin augmentation, also known as chin implant surgery, is a cosmetic procedure performed to improve the cosmetic appearance of the chin.
Who benefits from Chin Implant
Clients that will benefit from chin implant surgery are those that have a weak or receding chin or those that wish to have an improved jaw line.
Chin Implant Surgery
Medications (prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal) that can lead to post-operative bleeding are stopped two weeks before the chin implant surgery, if the prescribing physician clears the patient to stop them. The procedure is usually done in an outpatient surgery center. An incision will either be made in the mouth or under the chin. Several different types of implants can be used. Once the implant is in place, it is secured in place in order to decrease the risk of shifting. The wounds are then closed.
Narcotic pain medications are given to the client. Antibiotics may be given. If the incision is made inside the mouth, a special mouth rinse will also be given. You may also be restricted to a liquid diet for the first day. If an intraoral incision was used, there will be sutures inside the mouth that dissolve on their own. If the incision was made on the under side of the chin, these sutures are removed around the fifth day after the surgery. Bruising and swelling is common. Ice packs may be used to decrease this. Clients can typically return to work in one week and may be asked to stay on a soft diet for up to ten days. Vigorous activity can be resumed in six weeks.
Infections can occur and will likely result in the implant needing to be removed. Contour irregularities can also occur if the implant shifts. Sometimes injury to nerves of the face can result in numbness around the lip. Implant extrusion is also possible although very rare.
