Summary (TL;DR)
A Mommy Makeover is not a single surgery but a customized combination of body contouring procedures designed to address post-pregnancy changes. The most common components are a breast augmentation and/or lift, a tummy tuck, and liposuction. The ideal candidate is near their target weight, and the procedure is for sculpting, not weight loss. Recovery is a critical phase where following your surgeon's instructions is paramount to success. Costs vary based on the specific procedures chosen, and the best way to understand your options is through a dedicated, one-on-one consultation. For our many out-of-town patients, it's easiest to get started with the process via a virtual consultation.
What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is a highly personalized set of surgical procedures performed in a single session to address the common effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding on a woman's body. It is not a one-size-fits-all operation; rather, it is a bespoke plan we create together to target your specific areas of concern and help you regain your pre-pregnancy physique.
The goal is to restore shape and contour, tighten loose skin, and repair separated muscles. While every Mommy Makeover in Houston, Texas is unique, most are built around a core of three procedures: a breast procedure, a tummy tuck, and liposuction. However, we can also incorporate other surgeries, such as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), to achieve a more comprehensive and harmonious result.
Breast Augmentation with Lift
Pregnancy and breastfeeding often lead to a loss of breast volume and elasticity, resulting in breasts that appear deflated, saggy (a condition known as ptosis), or asymmetrical. A breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) addresses both of these issues simultaneously. The lift repositions the breast tissue and nipple to a more youthful, elevated position, while the implant restores lost volume and improves shape.
The primary benefit is a predictable and significant enhancement in breast shape, fullness, and position. For many of my patients, we discuss the differences between implants and fat transfer. While a fat transfer can offer a subtle, natural enhancement, implants provide unparalleled control over size, shape, and upper pole fullness, which is the beautiful, gentle curve at the top of the breast that many women desire.
In my practice, we often use highly cohesive, form-stable silicone implants, popularly known as “Gummy Bear” implants. These have an exceptionally low rupture rate and hold their shape, which allows for a very natural look and feel. They are a fantastic option for achieving beautiful, lasting results. You can learn more about Gummy Bear Breast Implants and why implants often deliver more predictable results than a fat transfer on our blog.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cornerstone of the Mommy Makeover. This procedure is designed to create a firmer, flatter abdominal profile by removing excess skin and fat from the midsection. Crucially, it also involves repairing the abdominal muscles. During pregnancy, the “six-pack” muscles (rectus abdominis) can separate, a condition called diastasis recti. This separation can cause a persistent lower belly pooch that no amount of crunches can fix.
During a tummy tuck, I surgically bring these muscles back together and suture them in place, effectively restoring the integrity of the abdominal wall. The benefits extend beyond aesthetics, as many patients report improved core strength and a reduction in lower back pain after the procedure.
HD Liposuction (Lipo 360)
High-Definition Liposuction, often referred to as Lipo 360, is an advanced body sculpting technique that goes beyond traditional liposuction. Instead of just removing fat from one isolated area, Lipo 360 treats the entire circumference of the torso—including the upper and lower abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), and upper-mid-to-lower back—as a single, integrated unit.
The benefit of this approach is a dramatic improvement in your overall silhouette. By strategically removing fat and sculpting the underlying tissues, we can create a more athletic, toned, and defined waistline. It's about creating curves and shadows that enhance your natural shape, resulting in a truly transformative outcome.
BBL/Butt Augmentation
For women who desire enhanced curves and a more balanced lower body, a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), or butt augmentation with fat transfer, can be an excellent addition to a Mommy Makeover. This procedure uses liposuction to harvest unwanted fat from areas like the abdomen, back, or thighs. This fat is then purified and meticulously injected into the buttocks to improve their size, shape, and projection.
The Brazilian Butt Lift offers a dual benefit: it slims the areas where fat is harvested while naturally enhancing the buttocks. The result is a more hourglass-like figure, achieved using your body's own tissue.
BMI Requirements: Are You a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
One of the most important factors for a safe and successful Mommy Makeover is being at or near your ideal body weight. For surgical candidates, we look for a Body Mass Index (BMI) that is typically under 30. This is not an arbitrary number; a lower BMI significantly reduces the risks associated with anesthesia and post-operative complications like blood clots and infection. It also leads to better aesthetic results, as the procedures are designed for contouring, not large-volume weight reduction.
While “plus-sized” mommy makeovers are sometimes discussed, they carry substantially higher risks and are not performed at Lind Plastic Surgery due to our unwavering commitment to patient safety. Our ideal candidates are generally within 10 to 20 pounds of their goal weight and have maintained it for several months. They are seeking assistance with stubborn pockets of fat, loose skin from pregnancy, and breast changes that have not responded to a healthy lifestyle.
Will You Lose Weight from Liposuction?
Patients often ask, “Doc, how many pounds am I going to lose after liposuction?” It's a common question, and the answer is key to understanding the procedure's true purpose. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss surgery. While we are removing fat, which has weight, the impact on the scale is more modest than you might think.
To put it into perspective, the maximum amount of fat I can safely remove in a single surgery is about five liters. Once all the post-operative swelling subsides, which can take months, those five liters translate to only about 10 pounds on the scale. So, if you have 50, 70, or 80 pounds to lose, liposuction alone will not get you there.
However, the power of liposuction lies in its ability to sculpt. Unlike dieting, where your body loses fat from all over, liposuction allows me to focus on the specific areas that bother you most and remove that fat quickly. This can provide a massive boost in the right direction and create a shape that might take years to achieve through diet and exercise alone, if ever. For a patient who is already close to their ideal body weight, this targeted sculpting may be all that is needed to achieve their goals.

How Much Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?
Because a Mommy Makeover is a completely custom set of procedures, the price will depend on the specific combination of surgeries required to achieve your desired outcome. There is no single price tag. The complexity of each procedure, the time required in the operating room, and the specific implants or techniques used all factor into the final cost.
To provide a general idea, most Mommy Makeovers performed at our Houston-area clinic range from $26,000 to $39,000. However, it is not uncommon for a more specialized or extensive Mommy Makeover to come in as high as $42,000, or for a more limited combination of procedures to be as low as $22,000. The only way to get an exact quote is through a personal consultation where we can develop your surgical plan.
Mommy Makeover Recovery Time and Tips
Recovery is a journey, not a destination, and it requires patience and diligence. The initial recovery period typically involves 2-3 weeks of taking it easy, with no driving and limited activity. You will need to arrange for help at home, especially if you have young children. Most patients can return to a desk job and light daily activities around the 2 to 3-week mark. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and intense workouts are typically off-limits for at least 6 weeks to allow your body to heal properly.
5 Mistakes to Avoid After a Mommy Makeover Surgery
Your actions during the post-operative period are just as important as the surgery itself. Based on my eight years in practice, here are the top five common mistakes patients can make that may compromise their recovery and results.
1. Being Too Sedentary
Many patients think they should go home and lie in bed for hours at a time. This is untrue and dangerous. Prolonged immobility sets you up for blood clots in your legs, which can travel to your lungs and become a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. I instruct all my patients to get up and walk for a few minutes every one to two hours while awake.
2. Wearing Compression Garments That Are Too Tight
We will place you in the exact garment with the right amount of compression needed for your recovery. If you start buying other garments online that are too small, you can destroy your results, compromise blood flow to your skin, and even cause skin death. Trust the garments and instructions provided by your surgical team.
3. Neglecting Hydration and Protein
It's common to feel nauseous after general anesthesia and not want to eat or drink. However, you must force yourself to take in water to avoid dehydration. Furthermore, after surgery, your body's protein requirements can go up by several hundred percent to fuel the healing process. Focus on high-protein foods and stay hydrated—it is extremely important for your recovery.
4. Getting Post-Op Advice from Unqualified Sources
Do not consult your nurse friend who has never worked in plastic surgery or turn to Google for answers. This will only cause unnecessary anxiety. At Lind Plastic Surgery, we provide you with all the instructions you need and are always available to answer your questions. It is super important that you stay focused on what your doctor and your doctor's nurses are telling you.
5. Not Bringing Your Caregiver to Your Pre-Op Appointment
This is a mistake I see in my practice every single week. Your caregiver is your lifeline in the first few days after surgery. It is crucial that they attend the pre-op appointment with you, as this is where a lot of the detailed instruction and teaching takes place. This ensures your caregiver knows exactly how to take care of you during the critical post-operative period.
