Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that is done to enhance breast size and projection with breast implants in Houston. If you are seeking breast augmentation, Dr. Lind can help.

Why get breast augmentation?

If you have smaller breasts, you may choose to enhance their size with a custom breast augmentation in The Woodlands. You may be unhappy with your lack of cleavage, or how tight-fitting or revealing tops or swimsuits look on you due to a lack of breast fullness. You may have average-sized breasts and would like to make them larger and fuller. Jeffrey G. Lind II, MD and The Lind Institute of Plastic Surgery offers safe, effective, and high-tech care for breast augmentation clients.

What does breast augmentation improve?

Breast implants can increase the upper pole fullness (amount of volume on the upper portion of the breast) if your breast contour lacks an attractive, plump appearance. If you have minor breast ptosis (drooping or sagging of the breast), breast implants can restore shape and projection.

Mothers that have breastfed their children may be unhappy with the loss of volume or the saggy appearance of their bust and choose to undergo breast augmentation in Houston to restore their pre-baby, youthful fullness. If you have breast asymmetry, a custom augmentation surgery can sometimes be performed to correct the issue.

Breast Augmentation Before & After

Breast augmentation surgical details

Breast augmentation in Houston is performed under general anesthesia in one of our on-site operating rooms. It’s an outpatient procedure, and you will be free to return home the same day under the care of another adult. Depending on all of the decisions made, the surgery will require about one to two hours. The sutures are typically hidden and will not need to be removed. Tape may be placed around your breasts to protect them during the healing phase. Your newly-shaped breasts will be supported with a customized LIND surgical bra.

Breast augmentation incisions

During your consultation with Dr. Lind, incision placement is one of the first decisions. The incisions may be placed in one of three locations:

  • Inframammary: The fold beneath the breast
  • Transareolar: Around the areola (the pigmented area surrounding the nipple)
  • Transaxillary: In the underarm

Dr. Lind does almost exclusively all incisions in the inframmary fold beneath the breasts. There are a few reasons for this which he will explain this to you at your consultation.  The scar is well hidden, as Dr. Lind has a lot of experience with this procedure. During your consultation, we will answer all your questions and concerns about incisions and possible scarring.

Implant placement

The next decision is whether to place the breast implant above (subglandular) or below (submuscular) the chest muscles. The vast majority of implants are placed beneath the muscle tissue.

This approach provides greater coverage for the implant, especially if you have very little natural breast tissue. It will make the implant far less visible, and will decrease the risk of rippling. The submuscular placement also reduces the risk of capsular contracture.

While breast implants can be placed above the chest muscle, this is really only recommended if you have a significant amount of natural breast tissue. This decision will also be discussed during your consultation for breast augmentation in The Woodlands.

How can I choose the best implant size?

Implant size is a personal decision, but one that can be made with input from friends, family, and your qualified plastic surgeon. There are several factors that will influence your decision about cup size. These include your lifestyle, body frame, aesthetic tastes, and long-term happiness with your results. If you are very active and regularly run, play sports, and lift weights, you may want to avoid overly large implants, which can be cumbersome. Secondly, it’s good to think about your wardrobe. Do you like to go braless? Do you want others to notice your new breasts? Or would you prefer a more subtle enhancement? These considerations will help ensure your implant size works for your daily routine.

It’s also essential that you consider your long-term satisfaction with your implants. Will you still be happy with your chosen cup size in 5 years? In 10? Dr. Lind has years of expertise when it comes to helping women choose the right implants for their unique goals, and he will assist you in evaluating your options. It is often possible to “try on” your implants beneath your blouse during your consultation so you can see firsthand how the chest may appear after surgery.

What type of implant is best: silicone or saline?

During your consultation, we will also discuss whether silicone or saline implants are right for you. Silicone implants come in pre-filled sizes, whereas saline implants are filled with saline after they are inserted. Because saline implants are filled after placement, they typically require a smaller incision.

Each type of implant has pros and cons, which we will talk about during your consultation for breast implants in Houston. Silicone implants have a more natural shape, bounce, look, and feel when compared with saline implants. Most women prefer the natural feel of silicone, as it more closely resembles the weight and softness of natural breast tissue. Dr. Lind uses gummy bear silicone implants by Allergan®. These implants have three different levels of gel cohesivity (gumminess), allowing even more customization of your breast augmentation procedure.

Implant shape

The next decision to make when choosing the type of breast implant is whether to use round or teardrop-shaped implants. Again, they both have their pros and cons. The biggest drawback to anatomically-shaped implants is that if the implant rotates or moves, it will impact the appearance of the breast, and will require revision surgery. Because there really is no great benefit to using shaped implants, Dr. Lind uses round implants exclusively.

Implant type

You have the option of either a smooth or textured implant shell. Dr. Lind only uses smooth shelled implants. The reasons for this will be discussed during your consultation.

Implant size and projection

Implants are available in a wide range of sizes and levels of projection. The projection of the implant is the degree to which the breasts will project outward from the chest. Your breast augmentation will be fully customized, and Dr. Lind has an exceptional degree of experience in determining the most attractive implants to enhance your figure and create the look you envision for your body. Not every patient needs an ultra-high profile implant, and he and his team will spend time educating you on the right implant and implant profile for you.

Visualize your new breasts with sizers

To assist in selecting the best implant size and projection for your specific needs and goals, we will ask you to wear a sports bra to your consultation so you can “try on” various implant sizers. This will give you an idea of what different volumes will look like post-operatively.  We invite you to bring photos of how you want your breasts to look as well.

Preparing for breast augmentation

When undergoing breast implant surgery, if you are a smoker, you will need to quit for at least six weeks before your surgery to avoid the risk of post-operative complications. Any medication or over-the-counter supplement that thins the blood must be halted at least two weeks before and after the operation.

What is the recovery from breast augmentation?

You will be given several prescriptions, including narcotic pain medication, a muscle relaxant, and an antibiotics. We will see you at about seven days post-op to ensure your recovery is proceeding as it should.

In most cases, you can shower 48 hours after your surgery and you can usually return to work or other light activities within a few days. You must avoid lifting anything over the weight 20 to 30 pounds for about six weeks.

You will be given a customized LIND surgical bra which should be worn the first two weeks, unless showering. Wearing this bra protects and supports the new implants and helps to decrease swelling. It’s also advised to sleep in a comfortable sports bra even beyond recovery timeframe.

In most cases, after six weeks you will be free to return to strenuous activity such as vigorous exercise. You will be able to enjoy lighter exercise, such as walking, much earlier.

Your breast implants will initially appear to be “riding high”, but over time they will relax and settle to their natural position. In most cases, the final result will not be evident for about six months. In some instances, breast massage may be advised and can help move the implants into the proper position.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The total cost of breast augmentation will vary, based on the techniques utilized, the type of implants chosen, and on whether the surgery is combined with a breast lift or other body contouring option. Pricing typically includes the surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, postoperative garment fees, and others. As a general rule, breast augmentation runs anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000. Dr. Lind will make sure you leave your consultation with a personalized quote and a list of financing options.

What procedures can be combined with breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is most commonly paired with mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, to both enhance breast volume and combat breast ptosis (sagging). The surgery is also often a component of a mommy makeover, a combination procedure to revitalize a woman's figure after giving birth. A mommy makeover typically includes breast augmentation, breast lift, abdominoplasty, liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, and facial rejuvenation with dermal fillers.

How will I know what implant size is right for me?

During your consultation, Dr. Lind will take a series of measurements to help identify which implant profile and cc size will best fit your anatomy while aching your goals. Implants are not one size fits all, and we want to minimize any risk of going too big. In fact, they are very custom to a patient’s particular frame and natural anatomy.

How soon can I go back to work?

Most patients are impressed with a quick and comfortable recovery. Pain meds are typically taken the first couple days if needed. Majority of our patients have surgery on a Wednesday or Thursday and are able to repost back to work on Monday, taking the long weekend to rest and relax.

Will I be able to breastfeed post-breast augmentation?

Breast implants cannot hurt or help the effect of breastfeeding. The incision is placed in the natural breast fold and implants are placed behind the muscle, in which case doesn’t disrupt any of the milk ducts.
